BOMBARDIER IN 1961

Please take special notice to the three 1961 Ski-Doo snowmachines and the changes which took place in this year.   Ski-doo Sr# 61260 is equipped with coil spring front suspension and wooden skis, similar to the 1960 Ski-doo Sr# 6022.  Ski-Doo Sr# 61366 has leaf spring front suspension and wooden skis.  The leaf spring suspension appears again on Ski-Doo Sr# 611122, but the wooden skis have been replaced with steel skis.  The Leaf springs proved to give a better ride and the steel skis were more durable.  These changes proved as great advancements in the snowmobiling industry and are still used today on a few models, by many companies.  Armand Bombardier was a very talented Canadian Inventor with his eyes always set on the future and never satisfied with the present.   He surely left his mark on the Industry he helped invent.

SERIAL NUMBERS

Early Bombardier serial numbers can be easily deciphered, if one knows how to read them.

• In 1960 serial numbers read 60-###

  • The first 2 digits reveal the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.
• In 1961 serial numbers read 61-####
• Once again the first two digits reveal the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.

• 611039 & Up
• Steel skis with leaf springs.

• In 1962 serial numbers read 62-####
• Yet, Once again the first two digits reveal the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.  Things change slightly in 1963.In 1963 serial numbers read 3-####.  This time the first digit reveals the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.
• In 1964 serial numbers read 4-####
• Once again, just like 1963, the first digit reveals the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.  Things change slightly again in 1965.
• In 1965 serial numbers read #####A5 or #####B5
• This simply reverses what happen before.  The first digits are the actual machine number and the last digit is the last digit of the year of manufacture.  Things change slightly again in 1966.
• In 1966 serial numbers read BB6-#####
• This simply means that the third digit in from the left is  the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.
• In 1967 serial numbers for a 1967 Olympique read BB7-#####
• Just like 1966, this simply means that the third digit in from the left is  the year of manufacture, the others are the actual machine number.

BOMBARDIER FACTS BY YEAR

• 1959
• 6 sleds built by Armand Bombardier with Planitary Gear Transmissions, 1 remains on display at the Bombardier Museum in Valcourt, Quebec, Canada.
• 1960
• 226 sleds built with coil sprung wood skis, slide throttle, and 7 h.p. Kohler engine.
• 1961
• 1200 sleds built with many ski and suspension updates.  USA sleds equipped with a 7 h.p. Kohler.  Canadian sleds equipped with 9 h.p. JLO.
• 1962
• First smaller steel chassis sled built, called the Alpine.
• 1963
• First year for fiberglass hoods & Twin tracks.
• 1964
• Similar to 1963 model sleds except for dash board.
